Application of Belt Filters in Food Waste Treatment

Application of Belt Filters in Food Waste Treatment

Food waste is an important part of domestic waste, mainly coming from households, restaurants, schools, corporate canteens, etc. Due to its complex composition and high water content, the treatment of food waste is challenging. Belt filter is a high-efficiency solid-liquid separation equipment commonly used to treat food waste. It can effectively reduce the water content of the waste and facilitate subsequent treatment. The following is the application of belt filters in food waste treatment.

Characteristics of kitchen waste

  • High moisture content
The moisture content is usually between 70% and 90%, which increases the difficulty of transportation and treatment. High moisture content makes the garbage easy to rot and emits a foul odor.
  • High organic matter content
The proportion of organic matter is high (accounting for about 80% of the total mass), including leftovers, leftovers, fruit peels, vegetables, meat, etc. It is easy to rot and produce greenhouse gases such as methane.
  • High grease and salt content
Contains a lot of grease and salt, which not only affects resource utilization but also may cause corrosion to equipment.
There are many inclusions, including non-degradable impurities such as plastic bags, metals, ceramics, bones, etc., which need to be sorted and removed.
  • Fast deterioration rate
Under high temperatures or improper storage conditions, kitchen waste quickly ferments and rots, producing pathogens and foul-smelling gases.

Process of Treating Kitchen Waste with a Belt Filter

Pretreatment of kitchen waste
First, use a crusher to break large pieces of garbage (such as bones, fruit peels, leftovers, etc.) into smaller particles for easy transportation and processing. Screening equipment removes non-degradable debris such as metals, plastic bags, and ceramics. Using a mixing device to mix the treated garbage to make the solid-liquid distribution more even, which is convenient for subsequent flocculation treatment.

Add flocculant and mix
Select appropriate flocculants (such as polyacrylamide PAM) according to the characteristics of the garbage (such as oil content and solid particle size). Flocculants can aggregate fine particles into larger flocs for easy filtration. In the mixing tank, the flocculant is fully in contact with the garbage by stirring to form stable flocs.

Dehydration process

First, under the action of gravity in the gravity dehydration area, the liquid part naturally seeps out of the filter belt, initially reducing the moisture content.

Then, in the wedge-shaped dehydration area, the filter belt is gradually tightened, slightly squeezing the flocs to further remove some of the water. Finally, in the squeezing dehydration area, the filter belt is pressurized step by step through multi-stage rollers, squeezing the garbage to the limit and forcing the water to be discharged.

The dehydrated solid waste (filter cake) is discharged by the scraper at the end of the filter belt for subsequent resource treatment (such as composting or anaerobic fermentation). The equipment is equipped with a high-pressure water cleaning system to flush the filter belt in real time to ensure its dehydration effect.

Advantages of Belt Filter

Efficient dehydration: The belt filter can reduce the moisture content of food waste to about 60% (depending on the material), greatly reducing the burden of subsequent processing.

Continuous operation: The equipment can work continuously for 24 hours, with strong processing capacity, suitable for occasions with large amounts of food waste.

Energy saving and environmental protection: Compared with traditional dehydration methods, it consumes less energy and reduces secondary pollution.

Equipment automation: Equipped with automatic cleaning and monitoring systems, it is simple to operate and has low maintenance costs.

Conclusion

The application of belt filters in the treatment of food waste can not only reduce the volume of waste but also help to recycle resources. It is an important choice in the current environmental protection treatment field.
